Akio Hirata's Exhibition of Hats by Nendo

To showcase 70 years of hats by milliner Akio Hirata, Japanese design studio Nendo used 4,000 white "ghost" hats as a "backdrop"...

I can only imagine the feeling, of being enveloped in a cloud...

I think this is a marvelous way to show his work, don't you? It makes me think of  Valentino's red dresses at his final retrospective, but I am liking this more ( not that I am not a huge fan of Valentino!)...

Hoping that you are enveloped in a dreamy cloud of summer relaxation,

A Beautiful Day and Some Fun Finds...

Yesterday we had a wonderful hike up at Mt. Charleston ~

We left 107 degree temps, and arrived there to stunning 81 degree temps...
What a difference a 30 minute drive can make!

We enjoyed it so much (although after 2 hours of uphill trek, I am feeling it today...), and are determined to make it a weekly event. We will be going to Mt. Zion in a few weeks, which I think is even more beautiful...I can't wait!

A few things that caught my eye this week...

These tote bags by ThursdayFriday are so fun! Last season they did Hermes' Birkin bags, and now they have their favourite Miu Miu bags on the new "It" totes...

These summer crostini's are making me ravenous! Dying to try out these combinations from The Kitchy Kitchen ~ the sauteed swiss chard, prosciutto and gruyere is calling my name right now!

For those days when all you need is a big hug, and there's no one around...
May I introduce  the Hug Chair, by Gabriella Asztalos

And last but not least, I find this such a fun  idea ~ perfect for gifts and favours,
the Seedbom by Kabloom09....

"Throw it Grow it
Seedboms are friendly bombs that contain all the necessary nutrients to grow flowers virtually anywhere! Tools for eco-warriors and guerrilla gardeners in the war against neglected neighbourhoods and weary wasteland. So get outside, join forces with nature and revive dull and lifeless places with an explosion of life and colour."

Don't you love it!? Brilliant idea , concept and packaging!

Hoping your weekend was bright and full of inspiration, and that the coming week is full of fun!
Many thanks to all of you for your wonderful thoughts on my last post ~ I appreciate it so much. With the craziness that was going on, I wasn't able to "get out" much, but look forward to visiting everyone this week!

xo,
Nathalie

Summertime and Campari

My favourite aperitif is Campari...an acquired taste, I love it with blood orange juice and a spritz of soda, pellegrino, or prosecco. Isn't this ad from the sixties fabulous? I like it much better than their modern ad campaigns.

I happened upon this recipe for Campari -Citrus sorbet the other day ....my mouth started watering immediately, it sounds so refreshing and palate cleansing! Seriously desire to make it...
My search for the recipe led me to "Mowielicious"...

And it just so happens that Mowie Kay, the food photographer behind the blog, just released the first issue of his magazine  today...

FILLED with stunning shots like these...

So gorgeous and inspirational! The online magazines these days are incredible ~
Perfect for lazy summer days...

My week has been long and emotion filled... my sister and I lost our father this past week. Sometimes life is strange, and things happen that years later you don't even understand anymore. And yet you hang on, just because you know that you don't want to open the door to start questioning. And you think, sometime in the future you will ...
When the future is taken away, it is a hard place to be. We were not in contact with our father for many years.
He was only 66 ~ somehow I thought that there was more time. My point here is, if there is something or someone you have been putting off facing...don't wait too long.

Have a relaxing weekend,
Nathalie

The Latest...Versace and H&M

The latest in the designer - HM collaboration will likely be sold out before the doors open, in November...
I know when Sonia Rykiel designed for them, they were not too clear about which shops were carrying the line, so don't get too excited, unless you are in NYC or LA. And don't expect the usual H&M pricing either...
With 40 pieces for women, and accessories, it looks like fun, if you can get your hands on some of it!
The ad video for Rykiel was fantastic, and I sure the Versace one will be too.

Are you a Versace fan? I think my Versace days when I had the Donatella bod may be done for now, but  the accessories will interest me. I am very interested in the line that Missoni will be doing for Target in September, there will be home items as well.

To read more, see the article in the New York Magazine .

Have a great day!

Fresh From The Farm...

Last night, we indulged and returned to our new favorite, Due Forni...for more chocolate pizza...mmmm!
We also had the most amazing beet salad ~ I wish I had taken a picture...

Wild arugula, gold and red beets, with a pesto dressing and grated goat cheese...

Every bit as good as the chocolate pizza! When we asked where the beets came from ~ they had such amazing flavor ~
Alex told us that they had somone that brought them all the way from the Santa Monica Farmer's Market to them.
This took me on a huge deja vu. I lived for ten years blocks from this market, and would ride my bike over to shop some of the most amazing produce that comes from the earth. I'd run into all of the chefs from all of the best LA restaurants, because everyone goes there...and return home loaded down with bags, ready to cook.

A couple of blocks from the beach, and jam packed...

This to me is like a candy store! I have never seen red carrots like the ones here, have you?

And the flowers...gorgeous and freshly cut!

We have a few Farmers Markets here, but after the Santa Monica Farmers Market, nothing comes close ( I do love the markets in Italy and France too!)

Do you have a great market near you?

Pesto, arugula, roasted beets and goat cheese...Try it! It was unbelievably delicious ~

Happy weekend,
Nathalie

Modern Design...

The clean lines of the Goggle Desk, by Danny Venlet for Babini, with the glossy lacquer and olive wood,
really appeal to me...especially with a Mac laptop and no clutter!

As much as I am attracted to white, I always will buy things in black ~
which do you prefer?

The Paisley chair by Vito Selma...ergonomic, and modelled after a womans' curves...

It does look dreamy indeed ~ I would choose my second colour choice, fuschia...

These chairs designed by Sergey Makhno are fun, for the right space...I do like the room colours here!

More Makhno fun...

A modern upcycling of a tradional piece...
I saw this on Pinterest, and am completely intrigued! I love wine boxes, and have them all over our garage, and here and there ...
( my husband is in the wine business, and I grew up in it). But I have never thought of using them as planters, isn't this a great idea!

Again I will go on about Pinterest...I find so many inspirations there!

Cheers,
Nathalie

Let Them Eat Cake!

I have sweets on the brain...
If I were told to eat these cakes, I would gladly!
It makes me wish that I were getting married all over again ~

If you are in the Washington DC area, you are in luck ~

Maggie Austin, cake maestro extraordinaire, has set up her cake "atelier"
in DC

You see the influences of her ballerina days in these stunning masterpieces...

They start at $10 per serving, and require a minimum order of $800...

Pieces of Art, they look (almost) too good to eat!

My wedding cake was very traditional, by Sweet Lady Jane of Los Angeles  ~ it was unbelievable, and I was thrilled with it...but I have to say if I were doing it over, or if I had a special event, I would LOVE one of these delicate and dreamy cakes.

What type of cake do you prefer?

I found out about Maggie Austin from Jill Gordon Celebrate, a dear friend of a dear friend (smile), who is THE wedding planner extraordinaire in The Hamptons...visit her site here to see some of the amazing events and weddings that she has done...

Happy Tuesday! Thanks for the sweet comments on dealing with my Grandmother's boxes ~ they are still sitting where they were dropped off ~  My Mother opened up one, and we found old letters and cards from the early 1900's, quite interesting. My Grandmother's father had played hockey for the Montreal Wanderers, and won the Stanley Cup twice...I think he is turning in his grave after Game 6 of  The Stanley Cup Finals last night.
We are Canucks fans in this house,
they had better be ready to go tomorrow night ~ this has been brutal!

Chocolate Pizza...Mamma Mia!

Okay, so I mentioned the other day that I was going to lunch for my husband's birthday to have the "chocolate pizza" that he has been talking non-stop to our sons about...

Is this not the most insanely decadent dessert ever???
I mean, I have had some serious desserts by some of the most reknowned pastry chefs in  the world, but this...
Takes the prize!
Layers of Vahlrona chocolate and Nutella, topped with vanilla gelato,
strawberries and bits of toffee ~

We were eagerly watching every step of the preparation...

You too can find heaven here, at Due Forni in Las Vegas,
a spot for the locals far off  "The Strip" ...
well, only a 15 minute drive away.

They offer both neapolitan and roman style pizzas, made in the only pizza ovens of their kind in this country, brought in from Cirigliano Forni ( read more about them here).

The Due Forni Family

The "killer" oven

My sons would have licked the plate had I let them!

Check out more about Due Forni here

We are thoroughly enjoying the beginning of our summer as you see,
I hope you are enjoying yours!

I have a huge job ahead of me, my Mother has been back East emptying my Grandmother's house, and getting her settled in her new "home"...
I came home from my chocolate pizza decadence to 8 HUGE boxes from UPS ~ cedar hope chest that is 200 pounds, and I have no idea what else. With our summer heat there is no stashing it in the garage for another day, it is all in my front entry.

This will be an interesting journey, perhaps I will be sharing. Last summer when all of the china, crystal and silver arrived it brought up alot. But these will be more personal items of hers, that I grew up with when visiting,
I really have to be in  the "right space"...

Have you "inherited" boxes from loved ones? How was it for you...or if that is too loaded a question, don't answer!

Peace,
Nathalie

The Next Imelda Marcos?

Hmmm, this really got me...
A five year old that loves heels is not too surprising, I see many a five year old in the stores wanting their moms to buy them Disney princess heels.
But a five year old with over $150,000 in shoes, one of them a pair of custom Louboutins?
With the rest of her wardrobe estimated in the millions...
And the "lucky" ??? girl is...

Suri Cruise

What will she be like at 13, 16, 21, 40?

I am so thankful in this day and age to have sons...at least until they come of age where they will start dating...
And then I will be praying  non stop that they have attractions to girls that are at least a little bit normal, whatever that may be. One of the big reasons that I left LA, where every Mommy and Me class was child and Nanny, no Mommy in sight.

OK, I will stop venting ~
Read more about Suri on Refinery 29 here

What do you think...or should I even ask!

Last day of school, hooray!!!

And a very Happy  Gemini Birthday to my Loving Husband ~ we are off to celebrate with chocolate pizza with the boys...

You Could Be A Rock Star in Shangri La

If your Rock and Roll tastes expand back to the days before  Lady Gaga and Justin Bieber, you may be interested in the historical Shangri La Ranch that just came up for sale in Malibu... The recording studio and home of Bob Dylan is listed at $3.195 million ~

The 4 bedroom, 3 bathroom house and recording studio were featured in Scorsese's  1978 documentary  "The Last Waltz."

If the walls could talk...

What a legendary spot to move into, rich with rock and roll history ...

And right on the legendary Malibu coastline... Way too cool!

I wish I were in Malibu right now, dreaming of the beach and escaping ~
The last couple of days of school for my sons, and it has been crazy, chock full of parties and performances and things to do...on top of it, my eldest son Marcello, who is 10,  had the added pressure of testing for his second degree brown belt in Shotokan Karate ( one belt away from black). He gets it tonight! I am so incredibly proud of him, years of hard work and discipline.
Tomorrow afternoon it is all DONE! And I can't wait...
Time to relax, and think up some fun things for the summer!
I will be going to Zion National Park in Utah  in July ...
And maybe get back to my LA roots and some beach time ~

Do you have any plans for the summer?

Happy Wednesday,
Nathalie
