Mad About Mona

I have always been intrigued with the Mona Lisa, and especially enjoy seeing her with a little "touch up."

Recycling in an Innovative Way...

I would love to have this on my desk... alas, I was too slow, and it had already sold on Giddyspinster's Etsy shop. I wonder if she has the pair available? See more of her creative upcycling here.

Karl Lagerfeld's Homage to One of my All Time Favourites

I was absolutely thrilled to see Karl Lagerfeld's recent shoot in Bazaar inspired by one of my favourite women, Peggy Guggenheim. The shoot is gorgeous, and I love seeing a modern take on her life. One of the most influential and flamboyant patrons in the history of art, she is fascinating. Every time I go to Venice, I make a point to go to her last home, The Palazzo Venier dei Leoni, now the Peggy Guggenheim Museum, filled with the treasures of twentieth century art that she collected.

In the enchanted garden of the palazzo, Peggy installed a marble Byzantine throne. Somewhere I have a picture of me sitting here...

Peggy's salon. The home is filled with fabulous mobiles by Calder. This one is made of Murano glass.

This is Peggy Guggenheim's autobiography. It is out of print and may take some searching, but what a great read on a fascinating woman.

Arnold Schwarzenegger
As I finished the last of my yearly "Well Visits" and labwork today, aging was foremost in my mind, and how much work it is to keep the body healthy, well, and looking good. So it was funny that when I got home I came across these pictures, and the accompanying article by Jack LaLanne, who, at 93 is really quite amazing, a role model for sure! In his words...."People don't die of old age, they die of neglect."
Hmmmm.... I had better keep busy!
Many thanks to those of you that entered my Gratitude Eye Pillow Giveaway...
The winner is...."La Belette Rouge!" I will be doing another one soon...

The Magnificent Marcello..."I Remember"

I have been on an old classics movie binge lately. I'm sorry, but the actors of the moment just do not hold a torch in comparison to the actors of the past. Something sparked me and I remembered this documentary that I had watched when it first came out, right before or at the time of Marcello Mastroianni's death, and I thought that I would search for it and get a copy, as my eldest son's name is Marcello, and he is quite interested in drama. It is no longer being made, but I was able to purchase a used "New" copy on glad I thought of it now while I could still get a copy. I watched it over two nights, as it is almost four hours of Marcello being filmed by his partner for the last 25 years of his life, Anna Maria. Hearing him talk about his life in cinema, his thoughts on life, clips of all of his classic movies, stories about people that he worked with...incredible. Really an amazing documentary that I highly recommend watching if you are a lover of Italian films and Marcello Mastroianni. It is in Italian, he speaks quickly...and the subtitles are not the best. So make sure that you are not too sleepy. I am sorry, he says that he always disliked the latin lover title that he was given, which is why he started choosing roles in which he portrayed older, obscure characters. But I truly enjoy his young handsome visage in films like"La Dolce Vita". No one quite like him.

A very deep and pensive man....
Ciao, Marcello....

Dolce Dreams Gratitude Eye Pillows Give Away

I have been working on this project for a while now, and finally have it done. Quite a while ago, first on Carla Coulson's blog, and then from other places, I voraciously read about the shop "merci" in Paris. I really was inspired ...
A) About the incredible awesomeness (southern California comes out in me sometimes) of the store...I cannot wait to go!
B) About the concept of seeing "thank you" everywhere. What a great reminder of a simple thought to keep with you all day.
C) I wanted to give back in some way.

And so, this is what I came up with. All of my eye pillows are hand embroidered on dupioni silk by myself, filled with english lavender buds from Provence, and organic golden flax seeds. They are available for purchase in my Etsy shop to the right.

HOWEVER....I am going to do a giveaway of your choice of colour and language of choice, to be announced next Monday, August 12. Just leave a comment with your favourite colour combination and language preference, and I will use to determine the winner. If you mention this on your blog, leave a second comment to get twice the chance of getting one! I will make the donation to St. Judes Ranch also...

merci, danke, thank you, grazie, gracias, arigato......
Happy Sunday!

Ten percent of the purchase price of my Gratitude eye pillows will be donated to a local charity that I support, St. Judes's Ranch for Children.
